While running errands in the Garment District, have you ever stopped to notice the pair of “twin” buildings on the west side of Seventh Avenue and West 37th Street? Perhaps you’ve even made copies at the FedEx Office or deposited a check at the Chase Bank, without ever realizing the historical significance of the buildings in which they’re located.
These two buildings, numbered 498 and 500 Seventh Avenue respectively, were once known as The Garment Center Capitol. The buildings date back to 1921, when two manufacturers (Mack Kanner and Saul Singer) decided to create a factory complex in the heart of the newly emerging New York Garment District.
Designed by architect Walter Mason, the Capitol buildings featured ground-floor retail with flexible showroom, office, and manufacturing space on the floors above. The project cost more than $125 million to build, and encompassed 1.5 million square feet. These were among the first buildings to be built in the new Garment District, which by the mid-1920s had rapidly become the fastest center of new construction anywhere in NYC.
When built in 1921, the Garment Center Capitol complex was the largest garment manufacturing center in the world, housing anywhere from 12,000 – 20,000 employees at any given time. The lower floors of the buildings housed manufacturing space, while upper floors featured amenties for factory owners, such as a banquet room and rooftop club. Other selling points of the buildings included large flexible floorplans, package shoots, truck loading docks, light and electricity, and even a hospital for employees.
Today, the buildings still host the showrooms of several fashion designers, as well as advertising, media, and other commercial tenants.

If you like Fashion or sewing, this is a great tour…Learned a lot about the history of the Fashion Industry and the effect it had on the city’s development, as well as the effect the city’s growth affected the Fashion industry. Getting to shop at the different fabric stores as well as notions stores was so much fun. Highly recommend this for those interested in sewing or fashion.–Trip Advisor review by Lynn T, June 26th, 2015
